Description
Joseph Haydn's The Creation was inspired by Handel's Messiah and Milton’s Paradise Lost. Take a minute to get the scoop!

Fun Fact
The first of the oratorio’s three parts begins with “Representation of Chaos,” an orchestral prelude that uses stark chords and shifting harmonies to portray the formlessness and disorder that preceded the Creation. The six days of creation occupy the remainder of the first and all of the second part, with each day introduced in recitative by the archangels Raphael (bass), Uriel (tenor), and Gabriel (soprano).

Bring in the New year with Joseph Haydn's The Creation, an oratorio dating back to April 1798. Haydn, inspired by Handel's Messiah, decided to craft his own cosmic symphony.

The oratorio, based on Milton’s Paradise Lost, begins with the "Representation of Chaos," an orchestral prelude vividly portraying formlessness. Subsequent parts detail the six days of creation, each day introduced by archangels through recitative.

Part three delves into Adam and Eve, with the bass soloist as Adam and the soprano as Eve. The oratorio spotlights their blissful union, concluding with a tender marriage duet. While hinting at temptation and expulsion from Eden, Haydn's focus remains on the joyous harmony of Adam and Eve.

Join this musical odyssey as Haydn weaves a sonic tapestry inspired by Milton, Handel, and his own genius. The Creation is more than an oratorio; it's a celestial masterpiece!
