The piano, a key instrument in Western music, was invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Italy.

His innovations included the use of hammers to strike the strings, enabling dynamic control and expressiveness. Initially known as the "fortepiano" due to its ability to produce both soft and loud sounds, it gained popularity across Europe.

By the late 18th century, improvements by craftsmen like Johann Andreas Stein and advancements in technology contributed to the piano's widespread adoption.

The 19th century witnessed a surge in piano production, making it a symbol of musical sophistication and a staple in households. Innovations like the cast iron frame and the upright piano design further fueled its popularity.

The piano became a versatile instrument, shaping the works of classical composers, serving as a centrepiece in homes, and evolving into various styles, including grand pianos and electric keyboards in the 20th century.
