Fun Fact
The last major work composed by Sir Edward Elgar was his Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85. Elgar completed the concerto in 1919, and it was premiered in London in 1919 by the cellist Felix Salmond. The concerto is known for its emotional depth and expressive melodies, and it has become one of the most popular and frequently performed cello concertos in the repertoire. Elgar also composed a few smaller works after the Cello Concerto, including the Severn Suite for brass band, Op. 87, which was completed in 1930.

Sir Edward Elgar, the renowned English composer, passed away on February 23, 1934, at the age of 76. 

Throughout his life, Elgar grappled with various health issues. In 1892, he was bedridden for two months due to a severe viral infection. In 1918, he underwent a tonsillectomy, and in 1933, he was diagnosed with inoperable colorectal cancer. Despite these challenges, Elgar remained stoic and composed.

His wife, Alice, documented his health struggles in her diary. She described the anxiety-filled day of his tonsillectomy, noting Elgar's calm demeanour. The operation was successful, but Elgar experienced intense pain afterward. 

Elgar's legacy lives on through his compositions, including his unfinished symphonic work and opera. His impact on the world of music is undeniable, and his memory is cherished by many.
