Description
Ever wonder what inspired Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz? This “program” symphony is fueled by Hector’s obsession with actress Harriet Smithson. It is a shocking ride of epic psychological dimensions. Take a minute to get the scoop!

Fun Fact
In the fall of 1827, at age 24, Hector Berlioz attended the opening night of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, performed in Paris by an English theatre company. On that night, Berlioz was fascinated by more than the work of the revered English poet: he was enchanted by Harriet Smithson, the young Irishwoman who played Ophelia. That enchantment soon turned to obsession as Berlioz haunted the stage door and inundated Smithson with love letters only to have his advances ignored.

Hi, I’m Steven Hobé.

Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz was premiered in 1830 — a musical expression of his passion for actress Harriet Smithson and his ongoing struggle with depression.

This Symphony moved into the realm of story-telling. From Part One — describing a young man who falls in love with the woman of his dreams ...aka Harriet.

Through to subsequent sections depicting his love being unrequited and subsequent poisoning of himself, leading to the witches' sabbath and march to the scaffold.

When it was first performed, this symphony was so shocking that it caused an uproar. Even Hector’s friends were astonished that he would put into music something so explicitly personal.

In life, he had a stormy relationship with Harriet Smithson. They married but were far from happy. Turns out she was in it for financial reasons, and the marriage ended. A tragic and tumultuous end indeed.
