Description
Beethoven was both composer and businessman as he hustled to make a living on a daily basis, balancing writing with the necessity of giving private lessons and negotiating with publishers. Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!

Fun Fact
The publishing industry during Beethoven’s time was in its infancy, and as such, it was quite unreliable. People of ill repute dominated the publishing business, as they stole music, “altered it, misattributed it, bribed copyists to steal it, and pasted their own name over copies bought from the original publishers.”

In his early years, Beethoven earned money by performing in salons as well as giving private lessons, an activity he wasn’t too fond of, sometimes yelling at students and in one case he bit a student on the shoulder.

Later, Beethoven earned from commissions. This involved a cash advance and then the patron was given exclusive performing rights for six months. After that, Beethoven could sell for publication. To this point, copyrights were essentially unknown, so it all came down to a one-time fee for the sale of a work.

Beethoven has been described by some as having been an unscrupulous businessman, as he aimed to attain the largest sum possible for his compositions. He would compare offers from various publishers, and even play them against each other. Good for him!

All this to the backdrop of music publishing growing as publishers were opening businesses all across Germany and Austria.

This sense of entrepreneurialism is a side of Beethoven we rarely consider. To produce such magical works while hustling to make a living.
